Engineering Notes
Decimal vs Binary Prefixes
Decimal prefixes (k, M, G, T) use base-10 (10^3, 10^6, 10^9, 10^12). Binary prefixes (Ki, Mi, Gi, Ti) use base-2 (2^10, 2^20, 2^30, 2^40). A 1 TB SSD has 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is ~931 GiB. This discrepancy is a common source of confusion.
